Mother always told me
lies were like honey:
sticky-sickly-sweet,
a close comfort,
the only way
I'd ever be loved.

But they were also
acidulous, selfish, toxic
(and beautiful).
They're all we ever were.

You have to understand
that it's a prevarication
for me to stare at you
and turn skywards
the corners of my mouth
when what I want
is to let that which blinds me
fall in torrents
upon my own chest
as I walk away.

I want to play the victim and succumb
to everything I said I'd never be.
