My heart begins to race
as I hold my breath to listen
to something that is not there,
to something that I can not see,
and no one else can hear.

The floor rolls like a sea
as I trip over my own two feet
and the black image
that streaks across my vision
makes me stop and look again,
only to find that where it was
is nothing and, once again,
I am seeing things.

A simple tap tap tapping
of my foot against the floor.
An uncontrolled jerk of my hand
sliding off the arm rest,
falling into my lap,
making me jump from the touch
that is mine but not my own.

Shivering like its ten degrees
when sweat rolls off my brow.
Inhaling and exhaling slowly,
trying to calm myself,
trying to slow my mind
that is racing so far ahead
that I can not seem to catch up.

Shaking hands reaching out
to grab the next pill bottle in line,
adding a blue pill to the green one,
mixing it with the pink ones,
and chasing it with the white ones.
Coupling those with the small round ones
and the little red one that makes me sleepy.

Popping the pills in my mouth
and swallowing hard to get them down,
hoping they help my ears not hear
and my eyes not see.
Praying they still my limbs
and numb my mind
just for a time
so I can stop
and just be
