The Origin of Peter Pan by =VertigoArt:iconVertigoArt:

Read Artist's Comments First

You have heard many stories about me,
some are true
and some are …
well …
truer.

In all my stories you only call me one thing.
Sometimes that one thing has more than one name
and there was that one time
when you called me the completely wrong name,
but still,
I’ve only got one name.
It’s a name I captured,
I was never issued one like you were.

So perhaps that’s where I’ll start my tale.
My true tale.

For years,
decades,
maybe even centuries,
I’ve been no older than I wanted to be.

I’ve been six,
three,
nine,
ten,
and even thirteen,
but that’s as old as I wanted to get.

I’ve never had an interest in growing up
and as the head boy of Neverland,
I can’t let my men down and get all grown up, now can I?
No I can’t.

I think I am getting ahead of myself,
I do that.

Let’s start from the beginning.
Seriously,
the beginning.
Where some entity created all this.

That is where my story really begins,
at the creation.

Okay, maybe not my story,
but the story of Neverland
and you need to know that story to get my story,
so just …
just listen.

The Christian bible talks about heaven and hell
and even purgatory.

I know,
I had Wendy read it to me once.
What it doesn’t say
is anything about Neverland,
she checked.

They chose to leave that part out,
I guess to not offend,
but the only way to offend
is to be offended
and the best way to be offended
is to tell a lie.
So I guess they’re all offending themselves
by leaving out a very big part of the world … Neverland.

So, anyway,
Neverland is kind of like heaven for little boys.
Only,
special little boys.
Boys that never had a mommy and daddy.
Boys that were never given a name.
Boys that died before they ever opened their eyes.

Sounds sad, doesn’t it?
Well, its not.
In Neverland we can be whatever we want to be.
We can have any name we want to have
and I found mine just laying around one day.

It was just sitting there all coy-like
and I was all bear-like
and I jumped
and it didn’t
and then I had I name.
Peter.
Peter Pan.

We aren’t trapped in Neverland,
we’re always free to go,
but if we go,
we have to grow up.
And if we grow up,
we can’t come back to Neverland.

As far as I know,
I’m the only one of the boys,
the boys that were lost,
affectionately named the Lost Boys,
that ever left Neverland and returned.
but you’ve heard that story.
This is the story of how I became the leader of the Lost Boys.

I came to Neverland sometime in the cycle of Christos.
That’s how we tell time in Neverland,
by knowing who the leader is.

Christos was the thirty-third leader of the Lost Boys.
Two gave it up,
one just disappeared,
and the rest left.
They left Neverland to grow up.

See that’s the other thing about Neverland,
that you may or may not know,
if we leave and start growing up,
we forget all about Neverland.
We can’t remember it.
That’s why when I left,
I took Tink, the fairy.
She held on to my memories for me
and gave them back when I needed them.
Awful nice of her,
don’t you think?

Anyway,
you know most of that story too,
so back to my story.

After Christos had been the leader for a while,
I showed up.

I don’t really remember anything before that,
unless someone told me I do,
but apparently I was about five years old.
I had all my teeth and I could walk and talk.
This was basically the age of most of the Lost Boys.
Some were slightly older
and one or two was slightly younger,
but remember,
we can be almost any age in Neverland,
as long as we didn’t grow up.

So the moment I arrived,
the boys started telling me about the mermaids
and the fairies
and all sorts of neat things.

They told me of how they lived in trees
and swam with dolphins.
It sounded like the paradise it was.
We were free
and we could do whatever we pleased.

One day,
while I was playing in the water with the mermaids,
Christos came to me and told me he was leaving.
He said he just wanted to see the world for a while.
He said he would be back.

We called a gathering of the boys
and told them Christos’ plan.
There was lots of grumbling,
but a few boys wanted to go with him.

When the arguing came to an end
we were watching fifteen out of thirty Lost Boys,
plus Christos,
fly off into the stars.

See,
what I haven’t told you,
is that we can fly too.
I told you we can do just about anything here.
Oh, and Neverland is somewhere in the stars.
When we leave, we are supposed to know where Earth is
and how to get there,
but like I said before,
our memory goes away as soon as we leave
so we may never know how to get back.

And that’s how I became leader of the Lost Boys.
After several phases of the moon
and no sign of any of those that left,
the boys made me the new leader.
And I lead them well.

You have heard my story from here, right?

Well I will end this one where that one began.

Tink told me she could hold on to my memories,
if I ever wanted to go see the world.

Author's Comments

This may get edited later, My editor is asleep and I wanted to get this up.

This is a monologue on the origin of Peter Pan.

Image a empty stage with a single white spotlight on a boy about 10 acting this out this, while you are following along.

My goal is it find a talented child to do just that and put it on You Tube or something.

Comments are greatly appreciated.

I have to say that from the beginning this draws the reader in, and reading the comments from you really does set the stage in the readers mind. I would also like to see this acted out, if you could find someone to do it.
The dialog flows very nicely, and even the breaks in explanations only serve to add to the overall effect. The vocabulary you chose to employ is easy to follow and would be simple for a young actor to pull off. It has an interesting twist to the whole story, and is very believable. All in all, a very nicely crafted script and a wonderful read.

I tried to go with the theme of a mature ten year old trying to tell a boastful story.

Yes, Peter has a backstory, but Neverland did not. There were several theories and the one I went with is my own wixed with the German theory of Totenkindergeschichte.

And I changed Peter's only slightly as since we do not know how time passes in Neverland ("its in the stars" so the moon may be slower or faster or a different moon, and they only tell time in NL by who the head boy is.) this could have been an interlude where he forgot and remembered later. ("I don’t really remember anything before that, unless someone told me I do,")

Just a little info, I really do do quite a bit of research for a piece bofore I write it and usually it has more than one meaning.

And Thank you for reading. :D
